Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet nominee Ali Hassan Joho appeared before the National Assembly appointing committee for vetting on Sunday, following his recent appointment by President William Ruto.
During the vetting process, Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuda questioned Joho about his ability to work with President Ruto, given Joho’s past public criticisms of the President. Lesuda referred to a previous statement by Joho, where he expressed having nothing to discuss with Ruto.
Before Joho could respond, committee chairman Moses Wetangula intervened, advising Joho that he did not need to answer such a question. Wetangula remarked, “Only fools do not change their minds,” indicating that it is acceptable to alter one’s stance over time. He further added, “I was to say that in Swahili, Wapumbavu tu ndio hawabadilishi mawazo.”
Lesuda’s question highlighted the potential challenges Joho might face working closely with President Ruto in the Cabinet. Joho acknowledged Wetangula’s point, implicitly suggesting his readiness to move beyond past disagreements.
Joho’s appointment by President Ruto to the Cabinet position for Mining and Blue Economy signifies a significant political shift. If approved by Parliament, Joho, a former Mombasa County Governor, will assume the role of Cabinet Secretary, where he will be expected to collaborate effectively within a Cabinet chaired by President Ruto. This appointment marks a new chapter in Joho’s political career, requiring him to navigate past political differences and contribute to the President’s administration.
