This evening, former Mombasa County Governor Hon. Hassan Joho faced a setback as the Supreme Court issued a ruling impacting a significant deal he secured. According to NTV, the court has blocked Joho’s port expansion project, which was set to provide his company with Shs 5.9 billion for constructing an extension at the Mombasa port. The decision follows a case filed by Okiya Omtatah, who challenged the transparency of the deal’s procurement process.
Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu stated that halting the construction aligns with public interest until the appeal filed by the Dock Workers Union and Senator Omtatah is resolved. The appeal raises concerns about the awarding process for the tender to Portside Freight Terminals Ltd, Portside CFS Ltd, and Heartland Terminals Ltd.
