Yesterday, protests erupted in various parts of the country, including Nairobi, Kisii, Karatina, and Mombasa. These demonstrations were far from peaceful, resulting in numerous injuries, the deaths of two individuals, and several instances of road fires ignited by burning tires. The protesters demand President William Ruto’s resignation, accusing him of incompetence and an inability to fulfill the duties of his office.
Gen Z has announced plans to protest every Tuesday and Thursday. Following yesterday’s demonstrations, activist Wesley Kibande shared Thursday’s plan on his X handle. According to the shared post, Thursday’s protest will involve occupying Uhuru Park. The organizers are calling on Gen Z members in Nairobi County to turn out in large numbers, aiming to gather 5 million participants to march to State House. They view President Ruto as an adversary, accusing his government of killing peaceful protesters, and demand his resignation.
Removing a sitting President requires unity, which is why organizers are urging massive participation to achieve their objective. It is hoped that Gen Z will conduct their protest peacefully to avoid further loss of life and property damage. The constitution grants the right to peaceful demonstration, and adherence to this principle is essential.
