Journalist Larry Madowo recently shared photos of himself enjoying lunch with Kenyan police officers in Haiti. This comes shortly after the CNN international correspondent had to flee for safety following an attack by Haitian gangs. Madowo was interviewing Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille at the General Hospital when gunfire erupted. They were evacuated under heavy security led by Haitian National Police Director General Normil Rameau and the General Commander of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).
The UN has been conducting training sessions for Kenyan police officers deployed to Haiti to combat gang violence. The UN Human Rights team guided the Multinational Security Support mission on integrating human rights and international humanitarian law into security operations. This training is crucial as gangs have become increasingly aggressive towards the officers, who have been reclaiming areas previously controlled by these groups.
Kenyan police are in Haiti to support local authorities in regaining control from gangs that had nearly overtaken the capital. Their duties include securing the presidential residence, port, main airport, key hospitals, and highways. MSS and Haitian National Police continue to collaborate on daily operations to stabilize the country and recover vital infrastructure. The Kenyan squad has also been hosting delegations from various foreign nations as part of their support mission.
