Rebel Rift Valley politician and vocal critic of President William Ruto, former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter, has made serious allegations against the head of state. Keter claims that President Ruto is coercing police officers to attend his church services to ensure his protection and bolster attendance.
According to Keter, the president is using these officers to shield himself from potential public disapproval and to enhance the turnout at his events. He argues that this practice infringes on the officers’ rights, particularly their freedom of belief and religion.
“When Zakayo forces the police to attend church services to prevent being booed and to improve the poor turnout of his functions, I believe it is a violation and infringement of the Bill of Rights. The constitution states that ‘A person shall not be compelled to act, or engage in any act, that is contrary to the person’s belief or religion,’” Keter remarked.
Today, President Ruto was in Baringo County for a church service, where his security detail was notably large. Since the onset of demonstrations, there has been a significant increase in his security presence, a move that Keter and others have questioned.
