The HIV virus can manifest in various ways depending on the stage of infection. However, because other illnesses can present similar symptoms, it’s not advisable to assume that someone is HIV positive based solely on their signs and symptoms. Therefore, taking an HIV test is essential to confirm any doubts.
While the symptoms alone cannot confirm HIV infection, there are five key signs that may indicate the presence of the virus:
1. Oral thrush (mouth thrush): A white coating in the mouth that persists despite regular brushing could be a sign of oral candidiasis, also known as thrush. This condition is caused by a weakened immune system and should not be ignored. Thrush can also occur in the throat and around the genital area.
2. Excessive night sweats: Some individuals may experience severe night sweats, soaking their bedding. This condition, known as hyperhidrosis, may be caused by an undiagnosed opportunistic infection in the body.
3. Significant weight loss: If a person loses 10% or more of their body weight, especially when accompanied by diarrhea lasting more than a week, it could indicate that the infection has progressed to a more severe stage.
4. Swollen lymph nodes: Swelling of the lymph nodes in areas such as the neck, groin, behind the ears, and under the arms may occur as the body fights a new infection. Regardless of whether it causes pain, swollen lymph nodes should prompt immediate medical attention.
5. Unusual rash: While not everyone with HIV will develop a rash, it’s important to recognize this symptom. HIV-related rashes typically appear as flat, discolored patches with small bumps, which differ from other common skin rashes.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical advice and consider getting tested for HIV.
