Nairobi City Mortuary attendant Sam discussed the topic of communication with the dead during an interview with Plug TV. Sam clarified that the dead do not communicate with the living through auditory or sensory means.
When asked if dead bodies communicate, Sam explained that although contact through dreams is possible, he has never encountered ghosts or experienced any contact with spirits at work. He reassured that it is normal for the bereaved to feel a sense of contact with their deceased loved ones, which can be a healthy aspect of the grieving process.
“If you have not seen a dead body, it is not an easy experience,” Sam noted. He added, “The dead do communicate, but not verbally. They may communicate through dreams, but not directly. There’s no such thing as hearing echoes, someone talking behind you, or tapping you on the shoulder while working a night shift. When a person dies, that’s it. I long for the day I get nightmares.”
Regarding unusual requests, Sam revealed that some communities have specific traditions about dressing the deceased. “There are tribes which do not want the deceased wearing certain undergarments. They believe that if the dead wear them, it brings bad mojo to those left behind,” Sam shared.
Overall, Sam’s insights provide a unique perspective on the experiences of a mortuary attendant and cultural practices surrounding death.
