Yesterday, Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) became a no-go zone as protesters clashed with police officers throughout the city. Despite the protesters’ peaceful intentions, as observed in previous demonstrations, the police responded with teargas and live bullets.
A viral clip showing a man fleeing from police before collapsing and dying has sparked widespread outrage online. Reports indicate that armed individuals in a car with covered plates were shooting teargas canisters and live bullets at the protesters.
This alarming development comes as the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported a death toll of 53, with three fatalities occurring yesterday. Additionally, hundreds are currently hospitalized, fighting for their lives after deadly encounters with the police.
Authorities have previously urged police officers to refrain from using excessive force or bullets during protests, but these calls seem to go unheeded. Kenyans have consistently demanded accountability for officers who have shot and killed individuals during the anti-government demonstrations.
Nevertheless, Gen-Z remains resolute, vowing to continue their weekly protests until President William Ruto steps down or fully implements his manifesto. Further details regarding these events will be provided as the situation develops.
